Home is where your heart is

September 3, 2010

Have I told you how homesick my kids are?
They would LOVE to move back to the Mid-West. The town that we really consider to be home is Lee’s Summit, Missouri. It is a great community and we really LOVED it there.
Downtown has these quaint buildings and really cool restaurants and fun decorating shops.downtown Lee’s Summit

It has this cool train station in the middle of downtown. At Christmas, Santa comes in to town on the Fire Engine, as the City Council sings Christmas Carols. I would call it a Bedroom Community. There is not a TON of big industry there, it is more the place people come home to. Plus we were about 3 hours from Branson and we love going down to the lake. Check out my post about one of the lodges down there-it is gorgeous–Click on Big Cedar Lodge. We are also a little over an hour away from all of my husband’s family farms.

It may sound like a tiny little town but it is in the Kansas City area and it is the hot spot to live. I tell you all of that so I can show you the Subway art that I made. You may wonder how those 2 things are going to CONNECT.

This project was so easy and you can do it too.

Supplies needed:
1} A 24 x 24 piece of wood (mine is about 1/2″)
2} The Rockler Sanding Bug
3}Rockler Milk Paint–I used the Lamp Black.
4} USA Vinyl kit from Design Divas Vinyl Lettering and Wall Art
5}A Dischanger to hang it up with. I used 2 but you can go with one.

I started with a board 24 x 24 and sanded it with my electric sander.
Then I went over it with my Rockler Sanding Bug till it was super smooth.

Next I painted it with my RocklerLamp Black Milk Paint. I love how thick it is. It is a GREAT Paint.

Once it was dry I added My Design Divas Vinyl and my favorite hanging tool Dischangers I had worked up a mock example of what I wanted and Rachel from Design Divas Vinyl Lettering and Wall Art changed it up a little, so it was a joint effort in creating it. I just love it and could not wait to show it off.

Here is what it looks like:

I wanted the font to represent every state.

I love each one.  I love how Oregon is slanted like you are Mountain Climbing.

We would love to take our children on an adventure and travel to all 50 states with them.

The United States is an unbelievable country and each state is so different and unique.

Do you see the City and State at the VERY bottom, I had her do our home town, because that is really where our heart is.

Rachel is selling the vinyl that we created, of course you can change the bottom city and state to match your home town. She is selling the USA Vinyl for $69.95. It will be 22×22 inch vinyl, with the customized city/state, and have 2 colour choices(mine has 3 colors but the one on their website shows 2 colors. Both look amazing). Design Divas is featuring The USA HOME IS WHERE YOUR HEART IS, on their website this month.

They are showcasing it on a wall. We know we won’t be here forever and I want to take it with us and that is why I put ours on a board, but it looks great however you want to do this piece.

Don’t you just LOVE IT?
I will be showing this over at THE DIY CLUB inc

And you MUST go over and take a look at our NEW LOOK–that is my other BIG announcement for the week. We are still tweaking some things.

Be sure to enter the party–we have a $500 give-a-way and only ONE WINNER

Bed & Breakfast and more

September 1, 2010

I wanted to make a menu board and knew exactly what I wanted it to look like.

Here is what you will need if you want to recreate this menu board:

DecoArt Chalkboard Paint  (it is the best chalkboard paint I have ever tried)

DecoArt WhiteWash Paint and Black Ebony

Design DivasVinyl letters or plain vinyl (I got mine from our awesome sponsor Design Divas, she carries affordable plain sheets of vinyl if you want to cut your own.)

Gorilla Glue

Gorilla Tape

Dischangers (I used 2 of the 51/2″ ones–just for extra safety but you could use smaller ones-just weigh your item and check the weight/size chart on their site.)

Trim

Wood

Hemp Rope

Clothespins

CHALK

tiny eye hooks

I sanded my board till it was super smooth then painted my board with the chalkboard paint.  While that was drying I cut my trim boards and made my chalk holder for the bottom of the board.  I glued it together with my Gorilla Wood Glue and used the tape to hold it together while it dried.  then I painted all of my other accent wood trim.

I used the Americana Black Ebony and the WhiteWash

Once my chalkboard paint was dry I glued on my accent pieces and taped those down.

Then I applied my vinyl letters.  I just lined it up with a straight edge and level.

I rubbed over the letters with my credit cards, then removed the backing and applied, going over them with a credit card again.

I took a couple of clothespins apart and soaked them in a mixture of my black paint and water so they would be stained instead of painted.

I need to make my kids one so they can play with it.  I have an idea in mind.

Miss Goo went and got the chalkboard off the house (it used to have the address on it).  They love the chalkboard.

I love it because they can just look at the board to see what is for dinner.  The great thing about chalkboard paint, if you need to marearrange your meal plan it is super quick and easy.

I added little eye hooks to the side of the chalkboard try and tied a line of hemp rope.  I clipped on my clothespins and there is a place for people to clip a message like

MOM, We are out of MILK.  I need tot ake a better picture of that so you can see that part.  I took these pictures before my Dischanger was done drying.

Mentioning Dischangers-my favorite hanging tool.  I added 2 of the large one to the back for hanging it.
