This is a great way to teach your children the story of the resurrection of Jesus and spend some family time in the kitchen together. Once the rolls are done they get to enjoy a yummy treat too.
Resurrection Rolls have been around for a long time. I have no idea where they originated. I know my Mom has had the recipe since I was a kid. Here is what we do.
I do not pull out a Bible because I don’t want butter, cinnamon and sugar stains all over one of our Bibles. I just tell the story.
We talk about the manger at Christmas and how we celebrate his birth but Easter is the time we celebrate Jesus suffering on the cross for our sins.
We open the crescent rolls and each child holds a roll.
We take a marshmallow and explain that Jesus was pure and without sin.
After Jesus died on the cross, they took the sinless son of God and they put oils on his body (we rub butter on the marshmallow) to prepare his body for burial.
We then roll the marshmallow in the cinnamon and sugar and explain that they used spices on his body before they wrapped Him in his burial cloth (we wrap the roll dough around the marshmallow, pinching it to seal it). We spray a cookie sheet before baking.
You can brush on a little melted butter on the rolls or butter them when they come out of the oven. The rolls are then placed in the oven (the tomb) and baked.
When the rolls are done according to the directions on the package, they are placed on a cooling rack.
While the rolls are still warm you call all the kids in and break open a roll to show them that Jesus (marshmallow) is no longer in the burial cloth explaining that after 3 days he rose again. I ask them if anyone else has ever been able to come back to life on their own? I explain that He could do that only because He Is the Son of God.
It was really cute, my little girl asked if maybe he transported into one of the other rolls. She wanted me to show her every roll.
To recreate this recipe you will need:
- Crescent rolls (I use the Jumbo ones)
- Marshmallows
- Butter
- Cinnamon
- Sugar
Come back MONDAY-I will share my Sloppy Jose Sandwiches.
I hope you make some Resurrection Rolls–your kids will thanks you.
