I’m Just A Flag Waving American

by CHERI on August 24, 2010

Can you believe Labor Day is almost here? Good Grief where has the year gone?

I began working on this project:

It is a twist on the typical American Flag. I love our flag with its stars and strips but when I received my stencils from Cutting Edge Stencils, I knew what I was going to do with this one. This is thinking outside the box with a stencil but that is what a craft loving gals does.

Do you know why I love Cutting Edge Stencils so much?

There are actually several reasons–

1} They have a wide range of styles?

–You like Damask:

–Or here is a Fun Funky Wheel:

–Here are some flowers:

–Do you love those large pieces of silverware for your kitchen?

Is Fresco your style?–

–Here is a fun one from their designer stencils

–Look at this medallion

2} Their stencils are large, fresh and hip (and some of them come in different sizes-meaning even bigger)

3} Some of their stencils can take on different looks

That is the same stencil.

NOW–I bet you love them too, don’t ya?

SO, back to my flag. I took my wood, went over it with my electric sander, and then mapped out my lines and “star” area.

I used my Gorilla Glue tape to mark my lines and cut in my paint. This tape is SUPER DUPER strong, it is GORILLA strength strong–seriously. I pulled some of the wood off when I removed it BUT I was not going to paint super accurate because I wanted this to have a little bit of a weathered look, so I was OK with that. Gorilla Glue has so many amazing projects. Each time I use them for a project I am more and more convinced about the amazing products that they have. I love them. We have used them for years, way before they became a sponsor on the DIY Club inc. Check out our Gorilla Glue party event.

I used my DecoArt paints to color my flag. I did not go with the typical RED, WHITE and BLUE.

For me, here is the difference between DecoArt paint and some of the other craft paints. Some are thin and almost translucent (some even seem oily and slick) and when you want something that covers, translucent doesn’t do the trick. Others are so thick it is almost like working with caulk. DecoArt paints are the right consistency.

I dry brushed colors and the Raw Umber gave it those areas that gave it some depth.

I have an address book by Warren Kimble. It is a colonial Flag piece of his. My kitchen at my old house was done in Americana. I will have to go pull photos and scan them and show it to you.

I will try to get that done for tomorrow–Okey dokey.

Here is what my address book looks like:

and her is another Warren Kimble piece:

I was trying to reach my inner Warren but no one can do Warren but Warren.

To make it look a little more Warrenish I grabbed my SANDING BUG from the amazing Rockler. These sanding bugs are so cool, they are attached with a spongy velcro and they are just so awesome to use. That point makes it easy to get in corners or focus on a small area. The rubber handle is ergonomically correct – LOVE THEM.

Then I added a to each end so she can hang this by chain or on nails.
They have these great little hooks that make them so versatile.

Just wait till you see what I do with this CLEAR Glass Knob– I just ordered one and can not wait to show you what I am going to make. I am so excited I can barely contain my excitement. They have so many cool items–seriously 9,000 to choose from.

I decided to rough up the edges to make it a little more rustic. I like it both ways.

I just love the USA and that flag, that offers us so many freedoms that so many people do not get to experience in their life time. I am grateful to a God who allowed me to live in the good ole USA.
