Psalm 51:7

New International Version (NIV)

 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

What is hyssop?

hys·sop/ˈhisəp/

Noun:
  1. A small bushy aromatic plant (Hyssopus officinalis) of the mint family, the bitter minty leaves of which are used in cooking and herbal…
  2. (in biblical use) A wild shrub of uncertain identity whose twigs were used for sprinkling in ancient Jewish rites of purification.

Here are some times it was used in the Bible:

* A bunch of hyssop was used to dip in the basin of blood of the Passover lamb to apply to the lintel and doorpost before the Israelites left Egypt. (Exodus 12:22) Since hyssop has strong woody stalks it could stand up to being shaken.
* Cleansing ceremony for a leper in Leviticus 14:1-8. Again, hyssop was the dipping agent into blood of a bird and used to sprinkle over the unclean person.
* In John 19:29, it was used at the crucifixion. “Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.”

Love your Sunday Devotional. When I taught on the Tabernacle (actually 3 times caused I loved it so much) we talked a lot about hyssop. When I read the verse 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow it brought back to memory something I had read. Hyssop was also used as a form of penecillin for healing purposes. When I thought about that I couldn’t help but say, “Praise the Lord” for His healing…When we become a child of the King we are clean…healed…and whiter than snow! Thanks for the post. Love the memories it brought back for me tonight. Be blessed. Cindy
