It’s just a coupon, how much can I really save?

by CHERI on August 13, 2009

Click on subsrcibe, at the top of the left hand panel before heading over for Info on how to put your name in for the give-a-way Give-a-way closes at midnight.

Hey ladies-do you know about the great deals at CVS? If you get a CVS card, which is FREE, when you purchase certain items in their flyers each week you can get things very inexpensively and even free PLUS you get ECBs (extra cash) that you can use towards purchases in CVS.

They have a short 5 question quiz-I just took it and you get a $5 off $25 printable coupon.

Also, if you take p 12 of their flyer to the pharmacy you get $5 off any purchase (UPDATE:You need to use their in-house clinic)

If you buy any candy from page 3, and spend $15 you get $5 off (UPDATE:The gal tried to tell me you had to buy $15 in candy but I kindly showed her another page that specifically stated you had to buy those items and this one said SPEND $15, get $5 with the purchase of any candy on this page. I told her it should state SPEND $15 in candy and get $5 and she gave it to me.)

The great thing about this coupon shopping is that you can stack coupons. What does that mean-you can use both a manufacturers coupon and in-store coupons (this works in grocery stores as well). AND you know what else I learned–you can get a B1G1 (buy 1 get 1 free deal) and use coupons for BOTH items,even though one is free.They ring the 2 items up, take off your coupons, then take off the free item and then you get your total.

Here is an example of a great way to combine in stores DEALS, Plus coupons, with the ECBs (extra CVS cash):

FIRST PURCHASE:
I can get Coppertone for 8.99 (minus coupons $5 coupon and a $1 coupon, my subtotal is 2.99) (I get $2ECB) UPDATE:The store has $2.00 off coupons hanging on the shelf.
I can also get Bic Soleil Razor 1ct or Cartridges 4 ct at $6.99(minus coupons $2 and $3 coupon, my subtotal is 1.99) (I get $3ECB)
Pg 3 of the flyer Buy any candy on the page, spend $15 and get $5 back-the best deal is Hershey/Snickers 2 for $1.00

My totals before any discounts
$ 8.99 coppertone
$ 6.99 razors
$ 1.00 candy
——-
$16.98
$ 7.00 (coppertone coupon)
—–
$10.98
$ 5.00 (razor coupons)
——
$5.98

So I spend $5.98 cents and get $10 in ECB for another purchase

2nd PURCHASE:
I go to the pharmacy and present page 12 and get a $5 coupon off my purchase.
I Buy $20 Nexxus products, including brushes get $10ECB (UPDATE:Watch your receipt closely-I got charged $13.99 for one of the products that had the $10 sign in front of them, so I have to go back because I didn’t get my $10 in ECB either)
I buy Old Spice/Secret (2 for $5 with $1ECB–if you have a coupon it would be less)

My totals:
$20.00 Nexxus
$ 5.00 deodorant
——-
$25.00
$10.00 ECB
————–
$15.00

I spend $15 (total 20.98) and get $11ECB

I can now make my 3rd purchase:
Diapers are $9 a pkg this week and you can get 2= $18 (minus my 2 coupons $1.50 each, my subtotal is $15 PLUS I get $4ECBs)
I can get sharpie pens for FREE (they are 99 cents and their is a $1 off coupon)(say I get 2)
I can get Colgate toothpaste (it’s a b1g1 at 2.79 each) (I print 2-$1.00 off coupons, my subtotal is 79 cents)

Now I look at my prices before any discounts:
$18.00
$ 1.98
$ 5.58 (2 toothpastes before the b1g1)
——–
$25.56
$ 5.00 ($5 off my $25 purchase from that short little quiz I took)
——–
$20.56
$ 3.00 diaper coupons
———
$17.56
$ 1.98 (sharpie coupons are $1 each but they don’t give you more than the amount of the pens
————
$15.58
$ 2.79 (my $ off for my b1g1 free toothpaste)
———-
$12.79
$ 2.00 (subtract my 2-$1.00 off toothpaste coupons)
———
$10.79
$11.00 (subtract my ECB)
——-
I got this all for $0 ($20.98 all together) and I have $4ECB from the diapers

So now I do my 4th purchase:
I can get Viva Towels at 5.99 (minus 50 cent coupon, there are no ECBs on this item, my subtotal is $5.49)
I can get Airwick freshmates or imotions for FREE (they are $5.99 with a $6 coupon)
I can get VO5 for 77 cents(never tried it but for 77c I can’t go wrong)

$ 5.99
$ .50 (coupon)
——-
$ 5.49
FREE AIRWICK
$ .77
——–
$ 6.26
$ 4.00 (I use $4.00ECB)
——–
$ 2.26

So I’ve paid a total of $23.24 –this all started because I needed diapers and wanted to see what kind of deals I could get-the diapers alone would have cost me $20

For $23.24 (plus tax) what did I get:
$20 in Nexxus products ($20.oo)
2 deodorants ($ 5.00)
Coppertone ($ 8.99)
Razors ($ 6.99)
candy ($ 1.00)
2 pkg diapers ($18.00)
2 sharpie pens ($ 1.98)
2 toothpaste ($ 5.58)
Papertowels ($ 5.99)
Airwick ($ 5.99)
shampoo ($ 0.77)

What would I have spend without any deals??? $80.29

***Had I looked at this on Sunday, they had this deal through Tues
$9.99 ECB on Revlon Colorstay Mineral Mousse $9.99 Limit 1
-$1 off Revlon Color Cosmetic Product. (I could have spent $9 and had $10 more in ECB-this would have been my first purchase and I would have applied the 10 ECB to my $20 purchase=which would have made my total $ out $22.24 – my $23.24 I will be spending today + the $9 in makeup and – the $10ECB=so I would have spent less and had $10 in make up.)

and if I had been doing this longer I could have had a coupon and made some money:
$5 ECB on a Contour Meter at $14.99 Limit 1 (there was a coupon out a few weeks ago–$30 off Bayer Breeze2 or Contour Meter–I think they run this deal every so often so watch for the coupons. So the item is free and you would get $5 in ECB(-My husband said “but we don’t need one” and I said “so, you make $5 for purchasing it and if you want you can sell it on craigs list and make even more money”) (I would have paid nothing, made a $5 profit-applying it to my imaginary total of $22.24, making my imaginary dollars out $17.24. I would have spent $14.98 and– if I wanted to sell it for $10 (still a deal for someone needing one-retail is $15) I would be even that much further ahead.)

So what do you think of coupons now???

I would LOVE to be able to save like that, but I really think that is too much work! I guess I need to re-evaluate my coupons!

I haven't tried the CVS thing yet. Lots of people say it's really helped them to stretch their budget when they thought there was no more room to stretch.
