It is my pleasure to introduce to you Jennifer from The Magic Brush
Jennifer is from Kansas City and for those of you who don’t know, although I live in Florida right now,
we are from the Kansas City area. Jennifer is soooo talented and has her own custom painting company so I asked her to do a fun tute for you gals. Thanks Jennifer–these are GORGEOUS.
I happen to LOVE ceiling medallions. I also have a small addiction to
chandeliers…. so what could be better than a chandelier that has a ceiling
medallion?! I always try to coordinate my medallions to the finish on my
light fixture. I want to give you the step by step play of painting a
medallion for your house similar to the one shown above.
1) Purchase a medallion from a home improvement store such as Home Depot or
Lowe’s. I’m going to suggest the bigger the better. The largest medallions
will run right around $50.
2) While at the store, hit the spray paint isle for a can of a spray paint
that is the color “Espresso”. I love this chocolate color. Unlike alot of
brown spray paints, it doesn’t have too much red it in. Pick up a sheet of
plastic and a cheap “chipbrush” while you are there.
3) When you get home, lay down some plastic in an open garage or outside.
Flip the box from the medallion upside down to lay the medallion on top of.
Spray it the Espresso color. You will probably need 2-3 THIN coats. Be
careful of going too thick when using spray paint. We tend to spray paint
like we would hairspray our hair… (no… seriously we do)… so do
several, thin coats.
4) You will need a few metallic paint colors from Zeke’s Paints, Sherwin
Williams or Hobby Lobby’s little bottles.. After the spray paint is dry, I
dry brush Modern Masters “English Brown” over the entire medallion. Don’t
try to get the color in all of the grooves. You are really just trying to
add depth to the brown and it helps to tone down the shine of the spray
paint.
5) Choose another metallic like “Antique Bronze” or “Blackened Bronze” from
the Modern Masters line of metallics. I put the tiniest bit of paint on the
tip only of my chipbrush. Lay the brush on it’s side and just “tip” the
edges of any parts on the medallion that sticks up.
6) Viola. Dry and hang.
This technique CAN be done after the medallion is already hung. But, it’s
soooooo much easier if you do it on the garage floor. If you already have a
medallion on the ceiling and want to faux it, see if you can slide newspaper
under the medallion to protect the ceiling. Or, you’ll have to tape the
ceiling off. You will have to roll the paint instead of spray paint it.
Of course, every princess needs a ceiling medallion in her room. Here is
Ava’s:
Happy painting!
