I had made a run to Big Lots and as I was heading for something completely different–and not very exciting–HAND SOAP–(I told you it wasn’t exciting) –but it got exciting when I saw these letters on one of the aisles.
They did not have every letter in the alphabet but they did have the letters “K-C-G” and the number “6”.
I grabbed all 4. They were only $2 each.
I didn’t want to keep them the stark white so I had to get my supplies out.
You will want to lightly sand the pieces the give your pieces a little “tooth” so the new paint will adhere, then add some primer.
I picked the “G” because all 4 of our kids names start with the letter “G”. I painted the “G” with DecoArt’s Cherry Red then went over it with the Alizarin Crimson. I love how both colors show through.
I grabbed a “K” & “C” because my hubby’s name starts with “K” and my name starts with “C”. I also think it is quirky because we are from the “KC”-Kansas City area. I painted the “K” & “C” in DecoArts Dazzling Metalic paints. I painted a coat of Shimmering Silver then went over that with the Black Pearl.
I took the “6” and mixed some of my Dutch Paint high gloss trim and mixed it with a little bit of DecoArt’s Spa Blue and painted over the “6”. I added a little more of the white gloss, lightening up the paint a little more and went over it again, letting some of the darker streaks show through. Then I took my DecoArt black paint and added weathered areas so the “6” looked like an old enamel number.
Then last thing you want to do is to give each one a coat of finishing spray to seal the paint. Rockler has a fabulous finishing spray –Deft–I love the finish–it is beautiful.
Each of them are so different and unique.
Today I am featuring the Vintage Art Desk Makeover over at the DIY Club.

Cheri, I love these letters. May have to run to Big Lots. I just found your blog through the linky followers party. After reading your story, I feel like I have known you forever. I live in Olathe,Ks. so I feel like we are practically neighbors. I have a linky party that starts on Sundays, hope you will come share sometime. I am your newest follower.
Ann—Olathe–oh my goodness. We lived in Kansas for a while and had our kids in the Upward Sports program at the Mid-America Nazarene University.
My sister lives in Prairie Village, Ks and the church they attend is out South –I can’t remember if it is in Olathe or Overland Park.
Susan,
I never really considered naming all of my kids with the same first letter. When I was pregnant with our second I threw out another G name–my hubby liked it. We had the sonogram that next week and when she announced boy #2 he started calling him by that name and that was that. When boy #3 came along both of the boys had favorite names picked out and said “he HAD to have a “G” name so we combined both of the names they wanted and created G3’s name. G4 was our girl–pretty G names for girls are hard to come by and many sound like little old ladies names. Each name fits them perfectly. When we go to picnics or big outings we always write on their cups “G1” “G2” “G3” “G4” that way if they share the same name with someone they don’t accidentally thinks it is their cup.
Our grandchildren’s names don’t start with the same letter but they all end with the same sound or letter Savannah, Mckenna, Emma, Noah and Jonah . This is another lovely project my friend xo
