We are all familiar with the famous “Betsy Ross” 13 stars, in a circle, flag as well as our current flag with 50 stars and 13 stripes but are you familiar with the wide variety of designs that we have had over the years?
In the early years someone might design a flag and have someone make one for them or sew one themselves so their are many variations of the 13 stars. Today we purchase flags from flag makers and we have an approved design.
The 13 star flag was in place for 18 years before a new design was commissioned. As each state was added to the union a new flag design had to be created. The 13 star flag was in duration for 18 years until Vermont and Kentucky were added and a new flag was commissioned. Duration-23 years.
Duration: 1 year when we had more states being added-Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee. We have 2 flag designs from that time.
Duration: 1 year-Illinois came into the Union.
Duration: 2 years – Alabama and Maine were added.
Duration: 14 years — Missouri was added.
Duration: 1 year- Arkansas and we were at 25 stars.
Duration: 8 years-Michigan came into the Union
Florida– Duration: 1 year
Texas– Duration: 1 year
Iowa– Duration: 1 year (2 flag designs)
Wisconsin was added- Duration: 3 years
We added in California– Duration: 7 years.
Minnesota– Duration: 1 year.
Oregon came into the Union and we have 4 flag designs– Duration: 2 years.
The 34th state was Kansas Duration: 2 years
West Virginia came into the Union- Duration: 2 years.
Nevada was the 36th state and we have 2 flag designs.
Duration: 2 years
Nebraska came in and we have 2 flag designs.
Duration: 10 years
Colorado (2 flag designs)- Duration: 13 years
5 states were added – Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington and the 43 star flag was designed.
Duration: 1 year
US 43 star flag
Wyoming came into the Union- Duration: 5 years.
US 44 star flag
Utah was added bringing our stars to 45.
Duration: 12 years

Oklahoma– Duration: 4 years

Arizona and New Mexico– Duration:47 years
US 48 star flag
Alaska was the 49th state– Duration: 1 year

Hawaii was the 50th state. Duration: 51 years

If Puerto Rico were to join the Union some flag designs are in consideration.
