Thanksgiving Traditions

by CHERI on November 13, 2009

**Sorry this is going up late ladies, I’ve had a bladder infection and my little girl wanted me to lay down with her (in my bed)last night and I fell asleep.

**I am getting ready to add the home tour and it will be after this post.

Traditions are funny little things-aren’t they?!
Do you love Thanksgiving and Christmas–I do.  When I was little and we lived in Michigan and Ohio, we were always with family for every Holiday, then my Dad took a job with Hallmark Cards (he’s an artist) and our family moved the beginning of November.  We were barely unpacked by Thanksgiving so that was the first Thanksgiving that we weren’t with any family.  I remember that first Missouri Thanksgiving. It was so warm we were outside in windbreakers and we were northerners and used to snow.  We talked with family, hearing about how cold it was, it just didn’t seem like Thanksgiving that year.  I have a lot of good memories, growing up with my cousins and now my cousins aren’t just family they are my friends too.  Some years we would go back for Christmas but it was impossible to go back for both and so we began making some new traditions of our own and as we got married and had our own families we all pitch in and divide up, who is bringing what.  Some of our recipes are MUST HAVES and things we only fix for the Holidays and then there are new things we try, some become favorites while others do not. I can remember when I was dating Prince Charming and I saw things on the table I had never seen before. My Mother-in-law is a good cook but there are a few things I just CAN NOT bring myself to try–even after 20 years of marriage. She makes 2 kinds of stuffing, one is an oyster dressing and I am making faces just typing those words. I guess-My tradition is that neither of her dressings have ever touched my lips. I can remember the first time she served mashed potatoes with wilted onions in vinegar and oil and there was no gravy on the table. All the boys were filling up their plates with potatoes and making a hole in the center and filling it with wilted onions. I had never had it before. I thought they were all nuts–Now I love it. A couple of years ago, one of the nephews brought his girlfriend and she was commenting about the weird wilted onion thing. I told her, I understand, I thought it was weird too but now I love it. Since I don’t fry ANYTHING-the only time we have wilted onions is when my Mother-in-Law makes them.

TRADITIONS are funny things aren’t they?

I love what this plate says:  We will be called OAKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.

It has started getting chilly in the evenings. The G-Force (that would be my 4 kiddos. All 4 kiddos have names that begin with G so they are the G-Force) and I were out running errands last night and they were commenting on how cold it was with their sleeveless shirts on. It is about 60 degress this morning–and I am not complaining, 90 degree weather does not bring on any nostalgic feelings that it is times for the Holidays.

Here are some of our MUST HAVES (I will come back and add some favorite recipes but I want to get this posted for you gals–once again I am so sorry.)

I loved this post! I enjoy hearing about the traditions of others! The holidays are a little difficult for me since I have lost both of my parents, but we forge ahead, hopefully making new memories as we go!

Hope you are feeling better!

The plate is precious! Love the saying! And I am with you on the oyster dressing. Can't bring myself to try it! But the wilted onions mashed potatoes sounds delicious. Maybe you will post that recipe! 🙂 ~Rhonda

Holiday traditions are wonderful! I was born on Thanksgiving Day (though my birthday doesn't fall on it every year) and that is our major Thanksgiving tradition…well, that and my sister's birthday which WILL be on Thanksgiving this year! Quite an exciting time for our family when we were growing up! Love your post!

I love that verse – it was the verse "theme" of a church we attended in another state.

Blessings to you
