I know you all have been curious to see what I was going to do with the cardboard rolls from toilet paper, paper towels and gift wrap tubes.
Well, I made candy garland.
This is so easy and fun to make and here is how I did it.
I cut the tubes up in varying sizes and found a few little boxes I threw in for a different shape. It would also be cute to add in circle discs with red swirls, making peppermints.
I covered each one in white tissue paper. I didn’t tape it down, I wrapped colored cellophane around it. I actually found these bags that were plastic and you could see through them, at Michael’s. They were a dollar, so I bought the light pinky red, a yellow and the pale purple. I already had some fuchsia and green cellophane but I picked up some turquoise blue. The cellophane and colored bags cost me about $7 and I still have plenty for other projects. (I don’t remember the cost of the tissue paper, maybe a couple dollars but I barely used any at all. I bought one of the 50 sheet packages and maybe used 3 or 4 sheets.)
If you are wondering how I have so many different colors–I combined some. I might have a turquoise and fuchsia together making the vibrant purple, or the light pink and yellow making a coral orange color, yellow and green for a different green color or green and turquoise for a teal blue color. My 2 big boys stayed up till about midnight helping me finish these. They headed off to bed and I stayed up till 1:30 finishing this project and tomorrows project. I can not wait till tomorrow.
Then I tied off the ends with clear fishing line. I cut my fishing line a little longer than needed because I left the remaining fishing line and when I had them all tied off, I tied 2 of the ends together with the fishing line I had left dangling. I think it is better to make several long strands instead of making it one long strand because it is harder to wrap a tree with one long strand. After making my one long strand, I pulled it apart in a couple of places so I had 3 different lines of candy garland, making it much easier to work with. This strand was long enough to go around one of my smaller trees.
I can not wait to show you what I am making for this
tree topper and some of the ornaments I am going to make.
I usually decorate 5 trees so it is fun doing different themes.
With the extra cellophane that I have ( I will need to go buy some more of the $1 bags) I want to make a huge garland. I don’t mean longer I mean a larger version. I need to find those styro foam sandwich boxes. Some styro foan balls would be cute too. I would like to drape it along the driveway between candy canes. If we had a front porch I would drape it on the front porch railing.
Before we begin the party I wanted to introduce you to one of my wonderful, sweet sponsors–Dee from Red Letter Words. If you have not been to her site, you are missing out on one special treat. I just love her works of ART. Be sure to read to the end for some great info and the mcklinky party.
Let’s meet DEE

~~Before you head over to her site I thought you would like to know a little more about her~~
She decorates her house mostly in red for Christmas so that she can leave the decorations up until Valentine’s Day.
She like surprises but only when she has been given enough hints about said surprise so that she can plan appropriately.
OH MY GOODNESS DEE–THAT IS SO VERY CHERI.

Aren’t you always amazed at the creativity of people and how they come up with business ideas? Red Letter Words was created out of a desire to have God’s word in her home but she wasn’t able to find anything in the store that fit her style. One day her oldest daughter brought home an art project where she wrote things about herself. She was so proud that she made it and the words on it meant something to her. It was from that art project that made Dee created art that is personal and meaningful.
Why did she name it RED LETTER WORDS?
Because there are Bible editions where the words spoken by Jesus are printed in red type. Red Letter Words is about having the un-changing truth of the Word of GOD as art in your home.
She is one busy gal-
There is nothing typical about her days:) Her family keeps her busy – She have a great husband, 4 awesome kids and a new puppy so she designs stuff when she can ~ at night or when everyone else is already busy.
Boy, oh Boy can I relate.

Some of her TOP sellers are Two are Better than One and We Love because He first loved us. The Travel Prints, especially New York City and London are popular. Hannahas prayer which reads I prayed for this child and the Lord granted me what I asked of Him- lots of ladies love this print for their babies rooms especially if they had a difficult pregnancy.
Hannah’s prayer is one of my favorites. If you have read my story –you’ll know why.
Inspiration
~Her Husband~Her Kids~God~Traveling~New Restaurants~Paint Colors`Scarves~Shoes
She says “Really there is inspiration everywhere. Sometimes I overload with inspiration – my notebooks are full of things I want to try or prints I want to design.”
Do you have any business advice that worked well for you that you’d care to share?
Habbakuk 2:2 says to write the vision down on tablets and make it plain to see so that those who read it can run with it. I started redletterwords.etsy.com in August of 2008, in September I sold my first print shortly after that I started writing down the vision of what I wanted to accomplish that month.
Every month the vision at the top of my list is to have people be reminded how very much God loves them and cares for them and that He has a good plan for them. And every month I get emails from women saying how much a certain print affected them.
What’s currently on Dee’s wish list?
My family is happy and healthy and growing in wisdom and favor everyday. Honestly I have everything that I could ever need.

Really love your garland! How thrifty!! Dee sounds cool. Off to learn more!
Hugs, Lisa
What a genious project with so many possibilities for sure. I have seen the colored cellophane rolls in some dollar stores as well. I think if you wrapped the under layer in paper resembling red/white stripes like candy canes it would be darling as well.
That is just too cute! It is the perfect project to try when my niece visits. Thank you so much!
I hope I do not double post, but I have to say this is just too cute. Even uncraftly me could do this. I am emailing it to my niece to see if she wants to try while she is here visiting. Thanks so much. I enjoy your site so much!
How very festive with all the bright colors! ♥ your candy garland, very creative use for toilet paper rolls….paper towel rolls would work, too?
Great ideal, thanks for sharing.

Those turned out really cool! Great idea.
That is such a cute and easy craft! laurie
Girl, you have SO much patience to sit there and cut, and wrap and tie, and wrap and wrap somemore. I would have gotten about 3 done, and been like "ok, that's enough" hah! they look fabulous, can't wait to see the round ones you make.
What a cool idea! I have been trying to think of an idea for ornaments made out of toilet paper rolls. (I have a lot and I want a craft the kids can do.)I bet the "candy" would look cute by themselves as just hanging ornaments! I'll have to try it out!
Very cute garland! I love it!
As I was reading about your outdoor garland I was brainstorming. You can cut up pool noodles to get the same shape as toilet paper rolls. And styrofoam packaging (around TV's, computers, etc.) may work for rectangular shapes.
I lvoe this garland! Very cool! I love how you mixed the colors to get more colores! cute and educational! 🙂
A very nice tutorial! It is so festive wrapped around those trees. Awesome idea.
So cute! When I was little, we had this ancient garland on the tree- it was little pieces of cardboard & foam wrapped like candy (they were the same size as regular hard candies, so small), then in between each one there was a section of hard plastic straws in white with red swirls. My parents hated it, but I loved it, so on it went, year after year!

How cute is that? The ultimate thrifty garland and adorable to boot! I think my boys would definitely try to unwrap them thinking surely they were treats for *them* :o)
