Coffee Stained Material

When I did my post about my American Kitchen, I received a request, asking me to do a tutorial on Coffee Staining Material.  Seriously, this is so simple.  If you have never done it before, how would you know.

The first thing I do is wash my fabric to get any of the “finish” off of the fabric, so the coffee will “take” to the material evenly.

I do not bother drying it because you are going to put it in your bathtub and I use hot water and let it just cover the material.  I make several pots of strong coffee and pour them into the water.  You don’t want to pour the coffee directly onto the fabric, without water in the tub or you will have splotchy areas and the areas that get coffee-fied while the 2nd pot is brewing will be darker. Pour the pot of coffee in.  It is dilated because of the extra water in the tub.  YOU are the judge as to how dark you want to go.  The more coffee you add the quicker you will achieve the color you want, the less coffee the longer it needs to stay in the bath.  You want to stain a lot darker thanyou want the final product to be and here is why.

NOW you are going to rinse and rinse and rinse until the water runs clear.  If it is lighter than you want redo the staining until you get the color you want to achieve.  Then rinse again.

I do not do it in my washing machine because of the risk of COFFEE STAINING something that I do not want stained.

Thank you!! I seriously didn’t know you could coffee-stain fabric. I’ve heard of coffee-staining paper, but not fabric. Then again, I don’t work with fabric – at all. LOL But I’m learning…

FINALLY! Something I could actually do! But I’d have no idea what to do with the fabric after that …
Have a lovely eve ~
