Home is where your heart is

Have I told you how homesick my kids are?
They would LOVE to move back to the Mid-West. The town that we really consider to be home is Lee’s Summit, Missouri. It is a great community and we really LOVED it there.
Downtown has these quaint buildings and really cool restaurants and fun decorating shops.downtown Lee’s Summit

It has this cool train station in the middle of downtown. At Christmas, Santa comes in to town on the Fire Engine, as the City Council sings Christmas Carols. I would call it a Bedroom Community. There is not a TON of big industry there, it is more the place people come home to. Plus we were about 3 hours from Branson and we love going down to the lake. Check out my post about one of the lodges down there-it is gorgeous–Click on Big Cedar Lodge. We are also a little over an hour away from all of my husband’s family farms.

It may sound like a tiny little town but it is in the Kansas City area and it is the hot spot to live. I tell you all of that so I can show you the Subway art that I made. You may wonder how those 2 things are going to CONNECT.

This project was so easy and you can do it too.

Supplies needed:
1} A 24 x 24 piece of wood (mine is about 1/2″)
2} The Rockler Sanding Bug
3}Rockler Milk Paint–I used the Lamp Black.
4} USA Vinyl kit from Design Divas Vinyl Lettering and Wall Art
5}A Dischanger to hang it up with. I used 2 but you can go with one.

I started with a board 24 x 24 and sanded it with my electric sander.
Then I went over it with my Rockler Sanding Bug till it was super smooth.

Next I painted it with my RocklerLamp Black Milk Paint. I love how thick it is. It is a GREAT Paint.

If you aren’t familiar with my LOVE of Dischangers then you must be NEW to Its So Very Cheri.  They are the best thing since the Ice Cream Man.  Seriously go order some and you will be hooked as well.

Once it was dry I added My Design Divas Vinyl and my favorite hanging tool Dischangers I had worked up a mock example of what I wanted and Rachel from Design Divas Vinyl Lettering and Wall Art changed it up a little, so it was a joint effort in creating it. I just love it and could not wait to show it off.

Here is what it looks like:

I wanted the font to represent every state.

I love each one.  I love how Oregon is slanted like you are Mountain Climbing.

We would love to take our children on an adventure and travel to all 50 states with them.

The United States is an unbelievable country and each state is so different and unique.

Do you see the City and State at the VERY bottom, I had her do our home town, because that is really where our heart is.

Rachel is selling the vinyl that we created, of course you can change the bottom city and state to match your home town. She is selling the USA Vinyl for $69.95. It will be 22×22 inch vinyl, with the customized city/state, and have 2 colour choices(mine has 3 colors but the one on their website shows 2 colors. Both look amazing). Design Divas is featuring The USA HOME IS WHERE YOUR HEART IS, on their website this month.

They are showcasing it on a wall. We know we won’t be here forever and I want to take it with us and that is why I put ours on a board, but it looks great however you want to do this piece.

That is so cool! I love all the different fonts.

I love it! Especially that each state is different. I like how it looks on the wall but like you, I would probably add it to canvas so (1) the location of where I placed it in my home could be changed; and (2) I could take it with me when I moved.

I do just love it, Cheri! What a great idea and a great piece. I haven’t moved out of the State of New York my whole life {just went from Brooklyn to Long Island}, but I could see this being a wonderful gift or home accessory to a family that does move a lot.

I’ve seen lots of subway art lately but I really like your design much better than most. The font to fit the state idea, works and it has such a meaningful message, as most of us, have a special place in our heart that we call HOME!

The wall art has a great look and should be very popular. So smart to be able to customize it.
Please stop by if you have time. We’ll have a great teen bedroom giveaway starting Friday. — Jane F.

You are so very right that Home is where WE (family) are — but I know I have some favorites too!

Memories — especially good ones — and good people who tug at your hearts strings are what brings us back to those times and places.

This is an awesome DIY!

Thanks for sharing.
