Candied Apples and Caramel Apples

You will need:

a large Green Apple

A large Red Apple

Hot Glue gun

glue sticks

Popsickle Sticks

scissors

Playdough

ribbon

DecoArt Cocoa Paint

DecoArt Sour Apple Paint

DecoArt Alzarian Crimson paint

DecoArt Tuscan Red Gloss Enamel

DecoArt Gloss Enamel Clear Medium

Small ornaments

alligator hair clips

~~~~~~~
I picked up 24 small glass balls from BIG LOTS. They came in containers with 12 each. I painted the bottom of 12 of them with the Alzarian Crimson paint. That took the shiny look away and made it look more like an apple. I painted about 1/2 way up. Once dry I painted on another coat. Here is what it looked like after the first coat.
Then I paonted the other 12. This time I painted the top with several coats of green to get the red covered.
Remove the top hanger from the ornament.
I had to cut my popstickle sticks so they would fit in the holes, plus I needed them to be a little shorter. (If my ornaments had been a little bigger I would not have needed to do that.)
Next-I rolled out the playdough into “snakes” and stuffed it down into the hole.
I put some hot glue on to the stick and pushed it down into the ornament and pushed it into the playdough. I added a little more hot glue to the opening up at the top to secure the popsickle stick.
Now PLEASE be EXTRA CAREFUL with this next step. Do not walk away from a hot glue gun-if you must unplug it and make sure a child can not pull the cord down on top of them.
I took my hot glue gun and drizzled hot glue up and down-all the way around the ornaments. I did a few strips, so the glue did not go all the way to the bottom, as it dried, I rotated it up and down. I used the same process for my large apples as well.
For the RED apples I drizzled the hot glue from the top (by the stick) down so it looked like caramel had been drizzled down the top of the apple, attach hair clip while glue is hot.
For my candied apples (I painted the tops green) I wanted it to look like they had been dipped into the candy coating. I picked which side would be the back and while the glue was still hot, I pressed open my alligator hair clip and then let it dry. It dries pretty quick.
Let your glue cool completly-
For the caramel apple–I painted the glue with the DecoArt Cocoa paint. It took a couple of coats.
The pictures don’t do this part justice. Can you see how the apples on the left look milky? That is where the hot glue had dried. It looked OK but I wanted fabulous. I pulled out my Gloss enamel-Tuscan Red and the clear medium.
It does not take much paint. You mix equal parts of both and the clear medium makes the red paint transparent. Now my apples look like real candied apples. To make it easier to work with, I just clipped 2 of them to a popsickle stick.
I covered the top little part where the ornament hook used to be with ribbon. Now just clipped them to your holiday tree.
Aren’t they adorable?
