Favorite Knock Offs & Fixing the Follower Problem

by CHERI on September 1, 2009

On Sunday I posted I have 101 questions about my follower page-its so confusing Now I will start off by saying: You may be reading this thinking yours is fine, so did I, until I asked a new follower to look at my account and confirm that my picture and blog name was showing (my new followers info wasn’t showing either, making it impossible to touch base from my follower section)–NOT SO—YIKES! I did all kinds of Google searches trying to figure out what was going on, finding very little info. I did find one thing, on Saturday, that had me going in and changing each account one by one and I thought surely there has to be an easier way so I stopped and looked some more. Sunday I made my post asking if any one knew what to do. Jennie contacted me because she was going back and forth looking at her account, which was showing correctly and her Moms account which was not showing correctly. So now I was driving others into insanity as well. Her account and her Moms appeared to be set up exactly the same-so what was up with one showing correctly and one not. I shared some info with her and she contacted me telling me how she had fixed her Moms account and it was exactly what I had found on Saturday Night. From what we have gathered, at some point Google has done an update that appears to only change new peoples accounts and if you were already in the system and didn’t know about the change and make any necessary updates your account didn’t change. I have, about 1/4 of my followers that I can not reach to come over and sign up with them and my guess is–they have no idea they can not be found when they become a follower on a blog.

One of the problems is that some people do not have a picture showing and if you don’t want one up that it fine but if you do want people to be able to see you then need to make sure you have a picture loaded in to both your blog account info and your Google account. You have to have your picture that you will be posting listed publicly (not all of your pictures). If you are having problems with this let me know but there aren’t too many places you have to look through on your account.

NOW-if you go over to my follower area on the right panel and click the follower button it will do one of 2 things. If you are not a follower it will bring up a page to become a follower. If you are already a follower it will take you to the Google sign in page-log in and it will put you at the top, up by the word FOLLOWER and you can see if there is a picture of you or a silhouette. CLICK on PROFILE, now you will see the word OPTIONS and it will bring up a drop down box, CLICK -SITE SETTINGS (under the big box),CLICK-ALREADY HAVE A PROFILE USE IT, now click on the BLOGGER and then close that box and end the last box and it should all be fixed. Now here is the unlovely part of all of this–in the info I found it said sometimes it will change all of your accounts but not always. I went into each of my followers and had to do this with almost all of them, every once in a while someone would come up already changed but I had to do each one individually. My next move is to go to my Dashboard and scroll down and manage all the blogs I follow (that may not be following me and that may be because they could never find me) and do the same thing. Once you have done this each time you click to follow someone it should show your picture and your name. PERSONALLY-I think it is best to use your blog name, if there are any additional updates someone at least knows your blog name and may be able to find you, if you use a code name or your personal name, they have no chance of finding you–That is just my 2 cents.
***UPDATE –Just because your picture and name are there does not mean your account can be accessed-if there is not a link area I can not get to you.

Here is the info Jennie sent on her search:
I think all of this is because Google must have made a change to the
Friend Connect feature at some point. Some people’s profiles are
different because of which feature they signed up under. (Google’s old
Follower button vs. the newer Friend Connect) What I did to get my
mom’s info up was to log into Blogger under her name. (Sorry, Mom!)
Then on YOUR page, I clicked on her profile. By her picture it says
‘Options’. When you click that there is a drop down menu and I clicked
on the ‘site settings’. This brought up a box with her profile. Right
under her profile it said ‘Already have a profile on the web, use it
instead’. When I clicked ‘use it instead’ it brought up a little box
with profiles to choose from. (Blogger, Google, Twitter, etc.) So I
clicked her Blogger profile.

So, hopefully this will solve the problem of people who have the
silhouette and no info. They’ll just have to fix it themselves, it
only takes a second. For you to fix yours, you might try going to
https://www.google.com/accounts/ and setting up your account there?
Blah. All of this is so frustrating!

Amy sent this info that she found:

http://bloggersentral.blogspot.com/2009/08/followers-gadget-display-problem.html

Here is some info Sami sent: (she sent me an initial e-mail telling me she was changing from following me to NOT FOLLOWING to try a experiment and then she would be back-if you want to try this it might work-my fear was I would loose all my followers and have to start all over so I did not try this but appreciate everyone who tried to figure this out and want to share their finds with you as well)
Dear Cheri,

My experiment worked and was very revealing. It is somewhat complicated but I will try my best to explain.

When I initially started following your blog on 8/19. My “User Profile: Privacy” settings were as follows:

Share My Profile: Check
Share My Name: not checked
Show My Email: Check
Show My Blogs:
My Texas Nest: Check
Show Sites I Follow: not checked

If you clicked on my little follower icon you could see my “About Me” blurb and follow a link to my blog.

Experiment Part 1:

I stopped following your blog and changed my “User Profile: Privacy” settings to this:

Share My Profile: not checked
Share My Name: not checked
Show My Email: Check
Show My Blogs:
My Texas Nest: Check
Show Sites I Follow: Check

The results were that you could only see my “sites I’ve joined” but there was no “About Me” or link to my blog. Just as you described in your “Problem #1”

Experiment Part 2:
I changed my User Profile settings back to the way they were originally and returned to your blog to see if they changed on your end.
They hadn’t.

So what is going on with blogger? Well, your website hangs onto (caches) whatever your follower’s settings were at the time they first started following. The cache doesn’t update when/if your follower changes his/her privacy settings. Very frustrating.

I am sure for some of your followers the user profile privacy settings are an oversight. If they desire to be found via your blog then they will need to do this:

1) Stop Following your Site (Manage on Dashboard)
2) Go to Edit My Profile
3) Check the box next to “Share My Profile”
4) Go Back to your blog and select Follow again.

I think Blogger intended there to be an easier way but there are bugs in that system – of course. I will play around with it some more if I find an easier way I will let you know. 😉

It is also possible that some of your followers have purposely selected not to include their profile information for privacy reasons, but I think for many they don’t realize they haven’t included their info.

Now, I believe this might just be the most convoluted and complicated email I have ever written and I hope I was clear enough. Please let me know if I need to clarify any of the steps, etc. Hope this helps you in your quest to figure out your follower frustrations. 😉

Take care,
Samantha Garcia

I changed colors on each suggestion trying to make it less confusing. I hope this helps and if any one finds anything better-let me know. The few people that checked in with me to ask if their account was right and told it was not-were all surprised, they had no idea they couldn’t be found.
Now that I have that boring but necessary info up lets get to the FUN.

Sorry-I meant to have this up earlier but Prince Charming needed help with the morning routine-we had kiddos asking for bacon and eggs.
There is my Prince Charming-Oh I love that man. Our engagement was magical and he is everything I could ever want.

Now let me share a few of my favorites from the KNOCK OFF KNOCK OUT and before I do remember I have a new party starting tomorrow Celebrating the Holiday with your decorating, projects and tasty treats so mark your calendars and come on over.

Most of my Favorites this week are about Letters and Numbers but they also focus on family life whether it is all about making life a little easier or more organized, spending time together, making home a little more welcoming for family and friends or creating memories. All of the posts were great but here are my pics this week. All of my favorites can go over and grab this button:

Remember I LOVE reading every single comment and coming to visit you. Join my followers and subscribe and I will do the same. If you have not received a visit within 24 hours you need to contact me because I can’t get to you, it is best if you leave me a comment and let me know you joined as a follower so I can get to you and if you don’t want to be found let me know that-that is fine. We didn’t hit the 200 followers last night but we are so close and I already have the gift so if we hit 200 today I will still do a follower gift drawing. For a sneak peak at it, here is a picture AND be sure and sign up for a free subscribe account. Once you subscribe, you will get all new posts from anyone you follow. If you need more info–just ask me-this isn’t doing anything for me this is a benefit for YOU. I typically post each day but some people don’t. Subscribing keeps you from going to each blog and checking for a new post-you know who has anything new posted.

I am placing My Favs in the order that they listed this week.

1ST- Beth did a great DIY Erasable calendar project.

She saw this one:

And created this one:

GREAT JOB Beth and thank you for posted your creative project.

2ND- Ange’lique did a wonderful project that not only is beautiful with it’s chippy paint but also has memories wrapped in every piece of chippy paint. It is a great eclectic piece and if you know me you know I love eclectic. It wraps old and new together for one great piece. I love this window makeover, especially because of every memories she will have when she looks at it and the history she can share with her children.

3RD- Ally

Look at this free unfortunate desk..sad isn’t it?
Google is up to its crazy tricks again and I can’t see the inspiration piece but hopefully you’ll be able to view it when you go over but her desk is no longer sad and unfortunate, it is chic and BEA-UUUU-TEEEE-ful.
Don’t you agree-I want that piece.

4TH- Look what Tidy Mom did

So many people are doing great projects with the vinyls and she did too. Have I mentioned how much I love things with numbers and letters on them. I have a fun name and idea for our next home project–I can’t share it . I don’t want someone using it-not that any of you would do that but there are THE OTHERS -you know THE OTHERS from LOST that can show up anywhere.
Get inspired just looking at this project.

What a great job-I LOVE numbers-can I say that enough?

I SO need to do this.

5TH- Joy Beadworks did a great table redo. I have thought of doing a checkers table as part of our coffee table but have never done it. I love the metal-can I say I love a mixture of metal, woods, TEXTURE is what I am all about.

If you saw this:

Would you envision this?:

I love it-it just invites fun.

6TH-this week is On Morning T she did a great thrifty knock off

Nester did a project that she saw and loved and wanted to make

My Favorite part of her project is the letter-Does that shock you?

I could sing a High F (and I can do it gals-Have I ever told you I won state competition for Vocal Soloist when I was a Sr in high school-Oh yeah back in the golden days). Look at this:
AWWWWWW (Ok I couldn’t resist I had to hit the high F)

Thank you so much ladies, once again I’m INSPIRED by all of the KNOCKS OFF that are KNOCK OUTS

Don’t forget to fix your info in follower, if it needs fixed, and you haven’t done it yet.
